For thousands of years, men and women have enjoyed drinking wine. Today, the love of wine has evolved to the point where discerning individuals purchase

and collect their favorite vintages. In a proper wine cellar, these collections become richer in both flavor and value.

Some wines are meant to be opened and enjoyed immediately. Others should be carefully stored and allowed to flourish over time. These wines will take months, or even years, to reach maturity. To collect and preserve these fine wines, you need to create the perfect environment and climate in a wine cellar.

All types of wine, both white and red, must be stored in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Excessive heat or sunshine will have an adverse effect on the aging process.

In a wine cellar, the quality and flavor of your wines will slowly develop to perfection. By protecting your collection in this cool, dark environment, you can look forward to uncorking perfection in every bottle.

The most important aspect of your wine cellar is the temperature control. Be sure to equip the cellar with a system that has the ability to maintain a constant temperature. Wine is best stored at a temperature of about 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Your wine cellar may experience seasonal fluctuations in summer and winter with increases or decreases of about 10 degrees, but these slow changes of temperature should not create an adverse affect on your wines. Avoid any rapid rise or drop in temperature, or frequent temperature fluctuations, as these can cause wines to age prematurely.

If you’re interested in having a wine cellar in your home, you have a couple of options available to you. Buying a pre-fabricated wine cellar from a trusted retailer is a rather expensive option. Most people don’t have the cash on hand to invest in this sort of luxury, and will choose instead to build their own. A good and effective wine cellar does not require a great deal of square footage. It can be as simple as converting a cold cellar storage area or even an unused closet.

Some people like to collect wines, but just don’t have the available space or the interest in building a proper wine cellar on their properties. These people may call on trusted wine merchants for alternative storage options. Some retailers and individuals have the cellar space available, and will allow you to use it for a rental fee.

It’s interesting, fun and even profitable to collect wines. If you take good care of your collection, you’ll truly enjoy the results of your efforts.
